Sunday River Invests in More Snowmaking
$1 million in capital investments dedicated to purchasing and installing new guns
Newry, Maine (Winter 2013/14)—Home to the most dependable snow in New England, Sunday River reinforces this reputation with the allocation of nearly $1 million of its $5.7 million capital enhancement budget in the form of 224 new HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns for this season.
Since 2010, Sunday River has been investing in HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns which currently make up 35 percent of the resort’s total arsenal.
This year’s investment covers four of the resort’s 135 trails: Lollapalooza, Rogue Angel, T72 (a new terrain park trail), and the upper half of Risky Business. To date, Sunday River can cover 95 percent of its trail system with snowmaking.
The trails picked for this year’s investment ensure that Sunday River’s biggest terrain park to date – T72 – will be well equipped to build the resort’s biggest jump line, as well as a 18-foot superpipe. The other three trails, some of the resort’s most popular, will produce quality snow coverage when needed.
Thanks to the HKD SV10 Impulses’ ability to use up to 90 percent less compressed air during favorable temperatures than older snowguns, Sunday River was able to open up more terrain at a faster rate during last year’s opening weekend and was able to provide better ski-in/ski-out access during the busy holiday season for guests staying at its Grand Summit Hotel.
Part of Sunday River’s long-term vision, this $1 million dollar investment moves the resort closer to its goal of doubling its water capacity and pump capability all while becoming more energy efficient.
Since 2007, Sunday River has benefited from Boyne Resort’s support with over $35 million in capital enhancements including the purchase of Boyne Low Energy Fan Guns, New England’s only Chondola, and night skiing.
