Man and woman against mountain race first and only of its kind in New England

Newry, Maine (July 5, 2010) – Sunday River announced today the addition of an adventure obstacle race set for Saturday, August 28, 2010. Rightfully named Tough Mountain Challenge, the five-kilometer event takes natural and man made obstacles found only at Sunday River and pins them against athletes to test physical and mental endurance.

“It’s unlike any race in the state,” said Dana Bullen, general manager for Sunday River. “Tough Mountain Challenge will become the benchmark to which all serious and aspiring athletes test their fitness.”

The five-kilometer course takes racers from the bottom of the South Ridge base area up to the bottom of Spruce Peak then down through the Barker base area before returning though the “Gates of Hell” to South Ridge. While the distance is relatively short, the combination of obstacles is both lengthy and challenging.

Race areas ranging from Suicide Sprint and Hurricane Alley, to Trench of Terror and Slip, Slide and Die, utilize such winter equipment as snowguns, race netting, terrain park features and gates to create one area of difficulty after another.

Registration for the Tough Mountain Challenge is $29 and includes race entry and lunch. Registration is open to athletes over the age of 18 and forms are available to download online at www.sundayriver.com or racers can sign up the day of the race.

The Tough Mountain Challenge is open to the first 200 athletes.
