Newry, Maine (October 7, 2013)—For the 50 men signed up to compete in this weekend’s North American Wife Carrying Championship at Sunday River Resort, Fall Festival Weekend means carrying their ‘wife’ over some hurdles, through a pond, and across the finish line.
For thousands of others, Sunday River’s Fall Festival Weekend is just as action-packed thanks to events and activities like the resort’s Zipline Tours, Twin Zips, Climbing Wall, Bungee Trampoline, and Scenic Lift Rides, and the following scheduled events:
Saturday, October 12, 2013
On Saturday at 11 a.m., all eyes turn to the 14th annual North American Wife Carrying Championship where 50 couples from around the world – including the 2013 World Wife Carrying Champion, Taisto Miettenin – test their skills on a 278-yard alpine obstacle course. Winners take home their wife’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash.
Come noon, guests will enjoy free live music by Pardon Me, Doug until 2 p.m., followed by Dead Sessions from 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The resort’s Taste of Maine food booths are also open during both concerts and will serve lobster rolls and margaritas.
Throughout the day, there’s also plenty of shopping to be had at the Sunday River Sports pre-season ski and snowboard sale, the New England Pass deadline event, and the Blue Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair. Fair festivities also include kid’s activities, chainsaw carving demonstrations, and horse-drawn wagon rides.

On Sunday, wife-carrying is replaced with running thanks to the 4- and 12-mile trail races and the 5k Mountain RAID obstacle race.
All three events take place out of the South Ridge base area with the trail events starting at 9 a.m. and the obstacle race starting at 1 p.m. Registration and more information is available at raidevents.com.
Anyone interested in a more leisurely pace is invited to shop at day two of the Sunday River Sports pre-season ski and snowboard sale, the New England Pass deadline event, and the Blue Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair, or rest their legs at either free outdoor concert featuring music by Bold Riley from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. and Tricky Britches from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Kid’s activities, chainsaw carving demonstrations and horse-drawn wagon rides are available again until 4 p.m.
Monday, October 14, 2013
After you’ve taken in the last remaining day of Sunday River’s summer activities including Mountain Biking, Hiking, Scenic Lift Rides and Zipline Tours and Twin Zips; and viewed the surrounding fall foliage, prepare to save room for a fall-inspired Peak Dinner at the resort’s mid-mountain Peak Lodge. Dinner kicks off at 6 p.m. and includes a roundtrip scenic lift ride and autumn-themed menu. Tickets are $42 per person and reservations are required, (207) 824-3500.
Fall Festival Weekend lodging packages are available and start at $79 per person. For more information on lodging or any of Sunday River’s Fall Festival events and activities, visit sundayriver.com or call (800) 543-2754.
