Maine Mineralogy Expeditions, Albany, Maine

Take a guided tour of the famous Bumpus Mine in Albany, located only 10 miles from Sunday River.  The Bumpus Mine became famous in the 1930's when it produced the world's largest Beryl Crystal, now resting at the Museum of Natural History in New York City.  The crystal is nearly 4' in diameter, 6' long, and weighs two tons!   Visit the mine to learn about the geology and mineralogy of Western Maine.  Plus you can even dig for your own special find. Songo Pond Mine, Albany, Maine

This is one of the only working gem mines in the U.S. where you can collect minerals annually.  More than 20 minerals, with several gem varieties have been found at the mine since 1992. Mine tailings (the collecting area) covers 1.5 acres and continues to grow. Many nationally recognized mineral museums have Songo Pond specimens in their collection.
