2016-17 Winter Events
Sunday River Resort and Bethel area boast this winter's top events
October 7-9: Fall Festival Weekend
As Sunday River comes one step closer to winter, Fall Festival welcomes a beautiful season in New England with foliage and fun. This autumnal celebration is home to the North American Wife Carrying Championship, the Blue Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair, the New England Cornhole Championship, and activities for the whole family. The festival also closes out the season for Sunday River's popular summer Mountain Park.
October 8: North American Wife Carrying Championship
In its 17th year, the North American Wife Carrying Championship features couples racing head-to-head through a 278-yard obstacle course in pursuit of five times the wife's weight in cash, her weight in beer, and entry into the World Championships in Finland next summer. Thousands flock to Sunday River's grassy slopes to view this truly unique competition.
October 9: New England Cornhole Championship
Over fifty teams will take to the courts of Sunday River's snowless slopes to determine the victor of the 3rd Annual New England Cornhole Championship, an American Cornhole Association-sanctioned event. A $600 cash purse is on the line for the top three teams, who will compete in the single-elimination tournament, based on cancellation scoring.
November 19-20: Tin Mountain Roundup
As you plan out your holiday feast, purchase some extra staples to bring with you to Sunday River to donate to its annual Tin Mountain Roundup. Each winter Sunday River works with an area food bank to ensure that those in need are provided with the food and staples needed to get through the cold winter months. Three donations brought to the Barker Lodge for this event qualifies skiers and snowboarders for a discounted lift ticket.
November 24-27: Thanksgiving Weekend
Spend your Thanksgiving on the slopes with fun activities for the whole family. Celebrate with a great Thanksgiving Day feast at one of the resort's two hotels, and while you're there, participate in games, movies, crafts, an evening fireworks show, plus the best early season conditions in New England.
November 26-27: Demo Days
Test out the latest skis, snowboards, and bindings from various manufacturers from around the world. Past suppliers have included Head, Rossignol, and Blizzard. The best part is that the $10 cost to participate (which must be paid using a credit card) can be applied as a $50 credit towards any new ski or snowboard package at Sunday River Sports to purchase any new ski or snowboard package.
December 4: The 17th Annual Santa Sunday
Celebrate the arrival of winter and the upcoming holiday season all while raising money for a good cause—the Sunday River Community Fund—with Sunday River's very own Santa Sunday. Pre-registered Santas arrive in full attire to schuss down the slopes during this picturesque holiday event! Pre-registration takes place the week prior and is open to 250 Santas.
December 17-18: The 8th Annual Winterfest Weekend
Winterfest is for everyone. It's an entire weekend dedicated to skiing, snowboarding, food, and fun. Santa always makes an appearance, as do Sunday River's very own Eddy and Betty the Yetis. Plus, Winterfest Weekend kicks off our evening activities with $5-night skiing and a huge party at the Foggy Goggle.
December 23-January 1: Christmas and New Year's Vacation Week
Spend the holidays on the slopes of Sunday River skiing and riding the most dependable snow in New England and participating in winter activities like twin zips, snow tubing, ice skating, live music, and special events for all ages.
January 2-6: College Week
Instead of hitting the books, college students can hit the slopes during College Week. With entertainment in the Foggy Goggle on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, plus $45 lift tickets and lodging packages all week long, this is the best way to round out winter break before heading back to school.
January 8-12: Children's Festival Week
Sunday River's Children's Festival Week is an entire week dedicated to families with activities including scavenger hunts, live entertainment, movies, and themed Perfect Turn kid's ski and snowboard clinics. Special evening performances are also scheduled and in the past have included fire dancers, a reptile show, and a mad science workshop. The best part about Children's Festival Week? Kids ages 3-12 can ski, snowboard, rent, learn, and stay all for free when staying with a paying adult!
January 22-26: Go50 Week
Activities this entire week are dedicated to those over the age of 50, including free Snowflake Factory tours, a wine dinner, moonlit snowshoeing, and live entertainment, plus great vacation packages that combine lift tickets and lodging.
January 28: Chef Summit
The second annual Chef Summit Tasting Event brings together award-winning chefs from top restaurants here in Maine and across New England for a night of celebration in the mountains with samplings of each chef's favorite creations. Complementing the food are creative cocktails from top mixologists and a selection of wine pairings.
February 3-5: White Out Weekend
Sunday River is proud to host White Out Weekend (WOW) in association with The OutRyders, New England's largest GLBTQ ski and snowboard club. WOW is all about stellar skiing and riding with friends, special events, and parties, including a themed party, fireworks, and après ski socials.
February 17-23: Maine & Massachusetts School Vacation Week
Ditch homework for a week-long field trip to Sunday River for Maine & Massachusetts School Vacation Week. Trail conditions are at their peak while ski and stay packages remain low and combine the added value of lodging and lift tickets per night booked. Plus, the lights stay on all week for night skiing and special evening performances.
February 26-March 2-: New Hampshire Vacation Week
Join families from the Granite State for peak conditions at an incredible value thanks to ski and stay packages that combine lift tickets and lodging. In addition to skiing and snowboarding across all eight mountain peaks, we're flipping the switch and turning on the fun with special events planned.
March 6-10: New Brunswick Vacation Week
Take a break from class with our friends and family from the 'Nord' for a week of fun.
March 13-17: Nova Scotia and Ontario Vacation Week
Canadian school breaks continue with Nova Scotia and Ontario Vacation Week. In addition to prime March conditions, guests will enjoy special events and special ski and stay packages.
March 18 & 25, April 8: Spring Après Concert Series
Sunday River celebrates spring with its weekend Après Spring Concert Series. Beginning March 18, the resort will host three live shows, featuring free music slopeside at South Ridge along with a BBQ and family-friendly fun. And, of course, beer. Past bands to perform at Sunday River include BALLYHOO!, Rustic Overtones, and Vertical Horizon. This season's lineup will be announced later this winter.
March 25: The 32nd Annual Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation Ski-A-Thon
This annual event supplies 70 percent of the yearly operating funds for Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation. Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is the largest, most widely known year-round program in Maine and attracts students from across the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.
March 26: Chili Cookoff & Masters of the Hose Race
To shake things up this year, our traditional chili cookoff will open up to amateur competitors, while the new Masters of the Hose race will pit firefighters against snowmakers in a slalom race on White Cap. All proceeds from the Chili Cookoff and Masters of the Hose Race will benefit the Sunday River Community Fund.
March 31-April 2: Spring Festival
This annual spring event is Sunday River's way of celebrating another great season. With live music, and classic events like the Margarita Mix-Off, the Slip 'N' Flip, and more, nothing marries a tropical party with a mountain getaway better. Spring Festival Weekend packages include lodging and lift tickets per night booked.
April 2017 April 7-9: Passholder Weekend
The Pond-A-Palooza pond skimming event gets bigger, better, and wetter each spring. Details for the 2017 Pond-a-Palooza will be announced in early March at sundayriver.com and registration space will be limited. The weekend will also include a free barbecue for all New England Passholders and special lodging-only packages.
April 15: The Great Tailgate
Spring skiing and tailgating go hand-in-hand, so it's only natural that the Great Tailgate combines late season shredding with delicious food made in the back of a truck. But here's the catch: each tailgate site will be judged on how well it gets decked out for the theme of the day. Join us in the Barker parking lot for live music, cornhole, and general springtime revelry all weekend long.
May 1: Ski Maynia
For many skiers and riders, Ski Maynia is just as much a rite of passage as hitting the slopes on opening day. The only difference is Ski Maynia marks the end of the season with free skiing/riding for everyone on May 1. Optimistic? Absolutely. But we're game for a good time so long as conditions allow for it.
