Summer Bucket List: Sunday River’s Tough Mountain Challenge

Press Release

NEWRY, MAINE (Summer 2017)-On Saturday, July 29, 2017, 3,500 pre-registered racers will take to the snowless slopes of Maine's Sunday River Resort to compete in one of New England's most popular summer events-the aptly named Tough Mountain Challenge.

Created in 2010 by Sunday River Resort, the Tough Mountain Challenge was designed to take some of the resort's most well-known and rugged mountain features, and pin them against racers interested in an alpine obstacle race. What started as a race featuring 200 racers has since exploded into a yearly event that boasts 3,500 men and women.

For this year's event, competitors can expect a course that is approximately 5 kilometers in length with up to 20 obstacles. A course map and detailed descriptions of each obstacle will be announced early this summer on and the event's Facebook Page.

Favorite obstacles from last year's Tough Mountain Challenge being reconsidered for this year include:

  • Hurricane Valley: A sprint through a battering ram of Sunday River's most powerful snowguns spraying "summer snow."

  • WTF: A steep steep steep uphill scramble.

  • Barker Pond Hop: A leap-of-faith pond-crossing designed with balance in mind.

  • Slip, Slide, and Die: Definitely not the Slip 'N Slides of your youth.

The Tough Mountain Challenge shotgun beer station for racers ages 21 and older is considered an event staple.

The Tough Mountain Challenge is open to ages 13 and older but recommended for ages 18 and older. There is also a Mini Mountain Challenge for kids 12 and younger that takes place on Sunday, July 30.

In addition to bragging rights, registrants take home a commemorative t-shirt and medal.
