Newry, Maine (November 23, 2016) - Thanksgiving came early for those skiers and snowboarders able to make it to today's Opening Day at Sunday River Resort. The resort is the first ski area to open in Maine for the 2016-17 season and did so at 9 a.m. sporting 9 trails and 3 chairlifts located on two of its eight mountain peaks.
To celebrate Opening Day, the first 400 guests to load the resort's chairlifts received an added welcome in the form of a koozie sporting the Sunday River's logo and words "Opening Day" and "#happyplacefound."
And, thanks to a mix of recent natural snow and non-stop snow-making since Sunday, November 20, Sunday River's Opening Day terrain included 55 acres of open terrain on Barker Mountain and Aurora Peak. All open terrain was deemed "expert only," which did nothing deter hundreds of skiers and snowboarders from loading the resort's chairlifts.
Tomorrow, Sunday River will celebrate Thanksgiving with more skiing and snowboarding as well as a buffet feast planned at its Camp Restaurant. Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27 marks the resort's annual Tin Mountain Roundup where guests can bring in three non-perishable goods or two items of winter clothing to receive $10 off of window lift ticket rates.
Lift tickets are $49 for adults, $39 for teens, and $35 for juniors and seniors. Guests can save money by purchasing your tickets online in advance.
