How to Win Your Wife’s Weight in Beer
Registration for the 2016 North American Wife Carrying Championship is openAugust 3, 2016
Newry, Maine (August 3, 2016)—On the heels of last month's World Wife Carrying Championship in Finland, Sunday River Resort opened registration for its 17th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship. New this year, the event has increased its total number of registration spots available from 50 couples to 75. As of this release, 50 couple registration spots remain for the 2016 North American Wife Carrying Championship event, which fills to capacity each year.Scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11AM, the North American Wife Carrying Championship draws interest from all over the world. During this annual fall event, former world, North American, and regional wife-carrying champions have been known to enter alongside off-the-couch couples, newlyweds, and friends for a day, in search of the same prize: winning their "wife's" weight in beer, five times her weight in cash, and the North American Championship title.
Built to international specifications, the North American Wife Carrying Championship course is 278 yards in length, with two dry obstacles, and one water obstacle often referred to as the "widow maker." The North American course is also run on uneven ground with elevation changes, as compared to the World course, which is predominantly flat and takes place on a track.
The North American race format varies slightly from the World Championship in that there is no minimum weight limit for the wife, and the "man and wife" pair must both be 21 years old. Additionally, the winning couple is determined by a head-to-head final race between the top two fastest couples, rather than determined by the top finishing time in the initial round. Choice of hold is left to the couple, who often use the Estonian Carry, where the wife is held in an upside down piggyback. Helmets are not required.
Based on the 19th century Finnish legend, wife-carrying became a sport as a result of men stealing wives from neighboring villages as means to prove their worth and strength to famed henchman, Herkko Ronkainen, also known as Ronkainen the Robber. Those men who were able to carry their stolen wives in the wilderness, over stones, stumps, fences and springs, were accepted to the Ronkainen's privileged group of thieves.
Cost for couples to register for this year's North American Wife Carrying Championship is $25; registration can be done online at sundayriver.com.
