New event launched by the Maine Sports Commission.

April 18, 2016

Newry, ME (April 18, 2016)Sunday River Resort will host the new MEMIC Peak2Peak Challenge on September 10, 2016. During this event, racers are tasked with summiting each of Sunday River's eight peaks, over 3 miles wide and 2,000 vertical feet, by choosing their own course across the resort for the fastest time.

Competitors ages 13 and up can take part in the MEMIC Peak2Peak Challenge as an individual, or in teams of two or four. Each racer must determine their route for the fastest way to the top of each peak. Teams will have the option of splitting peak assignments between members of their team, while individuals must summit all eight peaks on their own. Teams must cross the start and finish line together. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in the individual male, individual female, team of two, and team of four categories.

Children ages 4 to 12 can participate in the Kids and Family Challenge scavenger hunt in the resort's South Ridge area. Both competitors and spectators are invited to enjoy live music, food, and activities at Sunday River's Mountain Park, like ziplining, disc golf, rock climbing, a bungee trampoline, scenic lift rides, and mountain biking.

Registration is now open and costs $59 per person until July 1, 2016, and $69 after July 1, 2016. Only 300 spots are available. $5 of each registration will benefit PSL Services/STRIVE, who provide a community of support and assistance to people with cognitive disabilities or mental health diagnoses.

The MEMIC Peak2Peak Challenge joins the resort's summer and fall lineup of 2016 adventure races, including the Tough Mountain Challenge on July 23, and the North American Wife Carrying Championship on October 8. The race is developed and organized by the Maine Sports Commission, with MEMIC as the title sponsor, and additional support from the University of Southern Maine.
