Newry, Maine (December 2, 2017)-For Jeff Olivier from Scarborough, Maine, pulling an all-nighter  to get to Sunday River at 4:30 a.m. in hopes of securing the first chair on the new Spruce Peak Triple was a no-brainer.

The next person didn't arrive to the mountain for another two hours. Hundreds of guests gathered at the base of the resort's new $2.2 million Spruce Peak Triple at 9 this morning to celebrate the grand opening.

Resort officials set the stage with music and 400 pairs of commemorative sunglasses with "SPT 2.0" printed on each frame. Part of Sunday River's $4.7-million in capital improvements for the 2017-18 season, the new Spruce Peak Triple serves as the primary chairlift to the resort's Spruce Peak trails. The chairlift's modern technology will also make for a shorter ride, cutting passenger ride time from 11 minutes to eight minutes.

Spanning 4,184 feet, this new chairlift extends 1,207 vertical feet from the base of Spruce Peak to the summit. One hundred and forty-five chairs are set to carry up to 1,480 guests per hour at a rate of 500 feet per minute.

In total, Sunday River boasts eight interconnected mountain peaks, 135 trails, and 15 chairlifts, including this new Spruce Peak Triple. Open this weekend are six chairlifts and 24 trails, including the new Spruce Peak Triple.

The last time Sunday River installed a new chairlift was back in 2008 after the resort joined parent company Boyne Resorts. Together they welcomed the addition of the resort's signature Chondola lift (part chairlift, part gondola) designed to transport guests to the top of North Peak and its mid-mountain Peak Lodge.
