Four-thousand pre-registered racers to take on 21 obstacles spread across four miles of Sunday River Resort’s toughest alpine terrain

July 26, 2017

Four-thousand pre-registered racers will face 21 obstacles spread across four miles of Sunday River Resort's toughest alpine terrain

NEWRY, MAINE (July 26, 2017)-Four-thousand pre-registered competitors will likely ask themselves the same question before crossing the start line at Sunday River Resort's annual Tough Mountain Challenge this Saturday:

"Did I train hard enough?"

Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 4,000 pre-registered competitors will divide into heats of 100 racers leaving every 10 minutes until 3 p.m. Awards for the top three finishers in the male, female, and team category will take place at 4:30 p.m.

Sunday River Resort's largest summer event, the Tough Mountain Challenge is a four-mile alpine obstacle trail race that includes such obstacles as: Hurricane Valley - a field of high-powered snowguns set to spray runners from the start.
Bust 'N' Burn - rolling hills of mud and water designed similar to wartime trenches.
Pond Crossing - a slippery-when-wet lily pad-like crossing over Sunday River's Barker Pond.
Slip, Slide & Die - an adult-like take on a classic childhood pastime.

There is also the always-popular shotgun beer obstacle for those adults ages 21 and older.

Free for spectators to watch, the Tough Mountain Challenge's start and finish areas are located in the South Ridge base area. Spectators are encouraged to watch anywhere alongside the course, with the three best obstacle viewing options being the South Ridge base area and the Barker Mountain base area.

An event festival takes take place throughout the day and includes a barbecue and beer tent, as well as family friendly games and activities.

For kids interested in racing the resort offers the Mini Mountain Challenge, which takes place the following day, Sunday, July 30. Open to 400 kids ages 4-12, registration for the Mini Mountain Challenge is still open and can be done online, during the Tough Mountain Challenge, or day-of (space pending).
