Winter Mode Activated: Sunday River Powers Up Nearly 200 Snowguns to Kick-Off Snowmaking for the 2024/25 Season

Advanced snowmaking technology and upgraded ameneties set the stage for an unforgettable season

NEWRY, ME (October 27, 2024) —Early this morning, Sunday River's snowmaking system surged to life as nearly 200 snowguns covered seven trails across the Jordan and Locke peaks including, T2, Upper Sunday Punch, Rogue Angel, Lollapalooza, and the Jordan basin, marking the official start of snowmaking for the 2024/25 ski season.

Last summer, nearly two miles of twenty-inch snowmaking pipe connected the North Peak Booster Pump House to the Jordan Bowl summit, tripling the water capacity in the area.

This summer, the resort added 160 high-efficiency automated HKD snowguns across key trails as part of its long-term snowmaking master plan. Over the last three years, more than 550 new snowguns have been introduced.

These upgrades enable the resort to produce more snow with greater efficiency, allowing it to make the most of every cold snap while minimizing environmental impact. Sunday River’s commitment to investing in snowmaking technology is a reflection of its dedication to providing reliable early-season terrain and consistent snow coverage all season long.

Sunday River’s snowmaking system packs a powerful punch, pumping 11,500 gallons of water per minute. This capacity would fill Gillette Stadium in just over two days, Fenway Park in under 17 hours, an Olympic-sized pool in under an hour, or a standard bathtub in less than half a second.

“The start of snowmaking is always an exciting time for us,” said Resort General Manager Brian Heon. “With the power of our snowmaking system, we’re charging ahead to open the resort as soon as possible.”

Sunday River is committed to opening as soon as weather permits, with winter operations for the second year anticipated to begin in the Jordan Bowl. Guests can look forward to top-to-bottom skiing and a variety of trails serviced by the Jordan 8, an eight-place Doppelmayr D-Line chairlift. Equipped with heated seats, a weather-protective bubble, and a swift ride time of just over four and a half minutes, this lift offers mid-season luxury from the very start of the season.

The Jordan Hotel will offer ski-in, ski-out lodging, complimented by slopeside dining options and guest services support in the Jordan 8 terminal. As a result of the extensive snowmaking efforts on Lollapalooza and surrounding trails, guests can expect uninterrupted runs from the summit to the base with convenient ski-in/ski-out access from the Jordan Day parking lot.

Back and bigger than ever, The Igloo at Sunday River will feature three interconnected igloos, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that guests won’t find anywhere else in North America.

Additionally, a new restroom facility has been installed at the base of the Jordan 8 lift, enhancing comfort and significantly improving convenience, transforming the area into a central hub for guests.
