Cold Temps, No Problem: How to Stay Warm on the Slopes

Winter is in full swing, and nothing is keeping us from enjoying all eight peaks—except maybe a little extra time warming up by the fire. We’ve had some seriously cold mornings lately, and while fresh turns are always worth it, staying warm makes the day even better. The good news? Sunday River has plenty of ways to keep you toasty while you’re out making the most of the season.

Bubble Lifts and Chondola Cabins

We’d love to say we’ve mastered teleportation, but until that day comes, chairlifts are the only way up. Fortunately, we’ve got a few tricks to keep you comfy on the ride. Over at Barker and Jordan, our bubble lifts with heated seats keep you warm while you float up the mountain in style. Prefer a fully enclosed option? Hop in a Chondola cabin at South Ridge for a wind-free ride to North Peak. Either way, you’ll stay toasty on the way up!

NECK WARMER

When the temps drop, covering up is key—unlike Eddy and Betty, we don’t come with a built-in fur coat. Luckily, a good neck warmer does the trick. Not only will it keep you cozy, but it also prevents that cool breeze from sneaking down your jacket. Our go-to? The Blackstrap custom Sunday River edition. Grab the one at Sunday River Sports with our trail map on it, and you'll stay warm and always know where you are!

Quality Gloves or Mittens

Frozen fingers? Not on our watch. A solid pair of gloves or mittens is a must, and Sunday River Sports has plenty of options to keep your digits toasty. Our top pick? Hestra gloves. They’re warm, comfy, and let you maintain just enough dexterity to text your friends, “One more run.”

HOT BOWL OF SOUP

Nothing takes the chill off like a steaming bowl of soup—it's basically a hug in liquid form. At Sunday River, we’ve got a lineup of soups that would make even your grandma proud. Craving something classic? Go for tomato soup with a side of grilled cheese at the Mountain Room. Need something hearty? Chili or chowder has you covered from the South Ridge Food Court. And if you just want to warm up with some slurpable comfort, ramen from the Last Run Room is always a solid choice. Whatever you’re in the mood for, just swing by a lodge or hotel between laps and let a hot bowl of happiness do the rest.

Hot Chocolate

Nothing says winter vibes like wrapping your fingers around a piping hot cup of cocoa. Luckily, you don’t have to look far to find one at Sunday River—food courts, cafés, fine dining spots, and even The Igloo are all serving up the good stuff. But if you ask us, Coffee Hound at South Ridge Lodge is the best spot to grab a cup. It’s rich, it’s chocolatey, and it’ll warm you up faster than a fresh pair of hand warmers. Bonus points if you top it with extra whipped cream—because you’ve earned it.
